Mabon: The Autumnal Equinox

Mabon is the pagan holiday which is the autumnal equinox, or the first day of fall. It takes place on September 21st. Also known as the “pagan thanksgiving”, this holiday celebrates the second harvest of the season. Nearing the end of the growing season, it is a time to clean up the garden and preserve your garden goodies; a time for cleaning up for winter and preparing for the dark season to come.

Symbols: cornucopia, wine, gourds, acorns, grains, apples, leaves

Candle magik: Brown (earth), green (abundance), orange (energy) and yellow (intellect) candles

Foods: Corn, root vegetables, squash, pumpkins, seeds, nuts, breads, grains and pomegranates, potatoes, onions.

Herbs and flowers: basil, yarrow, chamomile, rosemary, safflower, rue, rose hips, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, thistle, honeysuckle, rose, sage, Solomon’s seal.

Incense: frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, sage, rosemary, and pine. Diffuse or burn autumn scents such as pumpkin spice and cinnamon apple.

Sacred gemstones: tigers eye, citrine, amber, hematite, topaz, yellow agate, lapis lazuli, sapphire

Activities: Pick pumpkins, pick apples, build a bonfire, can fruits and veggies from the garden, scatter offerings in harvested fields, decorate the altar with fall leaves and corn dollies, make a pine cone bird feeder, create an autumn wreath, make wine.
