Fairies in the Garden

International Fairy Day is coming, June 24th!

Fairies are decorating gardens everywhere. Sculptures and figurines are available to suit any size garden and price range. Whether displayed singly or in a grouping, fairies add a sense of wonder and magic to your garden.

Plantings in a fairy garden should include trees that provide food and shelter to living creatures. Flowers and herbs that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds would be ideal for fairies to frolic in. Larger flowers also provide shelter from the elements. Adding a water feature, like a bird bath or fountain helps provide everything your fairy and other woodland visitors need.

Fairy villages

The magical fae folk have inspired us to think about how they might like to live, if given a space in our world. There are fairy villages and fairy gardens popping up all over! By adding these features and creating an enchanting garden, your garden will be an invitation to the fairies.

Here’s a fairy garden in a dish. It’s all silk flowers and greens, with tiny fairy lights around the trellis and around the dish. I used the big purple flower to provide shade to the table (hee! hee!). You can use real plants and flowers as well, especially outside in your garden. Hope it inspires you to create one!

Using natural materials (of course, that’s what fairies would have access to), houses, furniture and even miniature gardens are sprouting alongside the full-sized flowers in gardens. Dish gardens, having a fairy room setting, sit on patio tables to delight children and adults alike. Creating these miniature treasures frees the imagination to enter a magical miniature world.

Here’s a link to a YouTube video of some beautiful fairy gardens that can be set in a container or added to your garden beds. There are a lot of great ideas.

Of course, you can create large and elaborate fairy villages for indoor or outdoor displays. Provide miniature ponds, trees with swings, rock paths and assorted structures for the fairies to live, work and play in. Make furniture with acorns, tree twigs, wood mulch, stones, pebbles, pods, and any other natural material you can find. Arrange your village in the garden under a tree (be sure to provide a fairy door for the base of the tree, as some fairy prefer to live inside the tree trunk). Add sparkly things (fairies love sparkly things) like crystals and wind chimes. Create a fairy ring with mushrooms or flowers for the fairies to dance in. Of course, don’t forget to string twinkle lights wherever you can.

Your magical garden will attract not only fairies, but everyone who enjoys the wonder of discovering these enchanting beings.
